What I Wore Wednesday – I’m From The Olden Days

First of all, I don’t wear housedresses…although I have a secret love for housedresses. I want to raid the closet of my 86 year old neighbor.  She still wears her housedresses from the 60′s and I swoon when I see her outside tending to her garden in them.

And then sometimes I think to myself “gosh she kind of looks like a size 4…how old is she again?”  Okay, not really. Okay really. Well, I do like vintage housedresses.

I need some proper housedresses.

Well I do usually wear dresses…but on the cold Winter days and the days that I most likely am not going to leave the house I dress for comfort.   It’s usually a legging type pants and some over-sized shirt.

This is a my typical “around the house” casual wear.

Sandy pants from Matilda Jane, booties from Macy’s, long gray tee from Splendid and striped top from Hot Mama.

*****

But even though I don’t wear housedresses from the 60′s..my kids already think I’m from the “olden days.” I remember realizing when my mom was from the olden days – but I had more proof as all of her pictures were in black and white.  The pictures of me in 1971 are clearly in color. Okay, yellow…but still color.

But I found myself starting sentences with “well when I was a kid” and “back when I was in school” and “things were better back then” and “do you know eggs were only 19 cents back in” and “I walked uphill both ways” and …well you get the picture.

As an example – a conversation on Sunday night while watching an old Brady Bunch rerun…

Eloise “Mom what are those knobs things sticking out from their TV and why does their TV stick out so far from the wall. And it’s so small!”

Me “Back when I was a kid TVs were pretty small and the components they were made from made them bigger in the back than they are now.”

Eloise “But what are those knobs?”

Me “They turn the channel and adjust the volume”

Eloise “But why can’t they just use the remotes?”

Me “They were no remotes back then.”

Eloise “OMG how did you change the channels?!”

Me “You told your kids to get up and change the channel for you.”

Eloise “So you had to WALK to the TV to make it work.”

Me “Yes, like a whole six feet or so and then stand there until you found something good to watch.”

Eloise “Wow that seems crazy!”

Me “Yes, it’s pretty much the only reason people had kids.”

Hilarious! The only reason people had kids… love it. Also love Brady Bunch re-runs. And you look cute in anything.

You look gorgeous and that outfit is so great on you!

And you’re so funny too. And you’re crafty. You are totally a triple threat of a Mommy. ;)

I don’t even dress that well when I GO OUT. Aptly, my post today is 5 fashion don’ts. No, it does not include yoga pants and flip flops because I like those.

And I remember TVs that require one to get up every so often. And I’m not old. Ahem.

So glad you are also old. I’ll keep you around.

That striped shirt is awesome! Love it & you are always so put together!
LOVE your conversation with the girls about life in the olden days! In our house, we had the ever trusty “clicker” to change the channels (all 4 of them.) Actually, some days I wish that we still only had 4 TV channels to choose from!

I had an old black and white TV in my bedroom when I was younger. With rabbit ears. OMG I hated that thing!

Ha, Ha, that is so true. It really is amazing. And we didn’t have computers either.

    Love your housedress. :)

Housedresses were the original snuggies and much better because they adapt for every season. Remember when remotes were clickers because the buttons actually made a sound? Good times.

I agree that your around-the-house casual is my dressy! You look great. And the tv conversation was hilarious. A co-worker still had a black and white tv a few years ago and her kids thought it was broken since it didn’t have any color…they were so confused.

hahahaha!!! That made my morning. Now, does she know what a CD is? Because my kids have NO idea!

I think my favourite picture on Pinterest was of a cassette tape and a pencil and the cation read “Our kids will never know how these two are related!” But I think quite a few of them will also have no idea what a CD is.

I LOVE that top from Hot Mama and now I am off to shop there, sigh. And your convo is hilarious, my oldest still cannot understand that there was a time we survived without microwaves.

Giggle. I’m with Galit on the film thing. Ryan has a fairly nice pre-digital camera, and Abbey is fascinated by it the way you might be about an antique relic.

Oh my–that is a far cry from my “around the house” bum wear. Nice. I’m with you on the house dress thing though. It’s usually warm here, and I have a whole collection of sundresses I wear for comfort and style. A few vintage ones as well, but those I wear out.

    • admin
      January 25, 2012 | 9:04 pm

Yes I love my sundresses. I need to find something that works in the winter.

Well, that and to freshen the ice in their glass of tea.

We rented a car last summer and it was manual everything. We had to explain that yes, you have to actually use your hand to roll the window up and down. First they were mortified, then intrigued, then just irritated. But they’re like that with cassette tapes (we just found a bag in the basement recently and got excited because HELLO 80s MUSIC!) and the record player.

Also, your around the house is so not my around the house wear.

Considering I am often in my flannel pjs until nearly noon (the work from home uniform!), I can’t even relate to your fashion style. But I am pretty productive in flannel, so I am going to keep working it!

In my basement, I have a rechargeable remote, and I’m me, so it’s never charged. So I need to walk to the cable box to change the channel. Only we have a LOT more channels now, so it’s a real pain to find something. And the cable box is up high, so the kids can’t reach it. It’s really, all told, horrible planning on my part.

And I really like your clothing selection . . . it always looks, to me, proper & trendy & stylish . . . Like, I want to send my sister here, saying “you should dress more like her,” but she’s stuck in her Jersey ways.

I pretty much need pics of “Jersey Ways…”

Crap…. I’m from the olden days. And I just recently got rid of one of those tv’s too.

You always look great! You should see what I wear on those days when I stay home and don’t leave the house. Totally unmentionable.

Oh… I do love the “olden days”. Our kids have so many luxuries…. Even when it takes 3 seconds for the next show to come on– they just can’t take it.
I so enjoyed this chuckle. Thank you

You look fabulous! And I remember the days of having to change the remote, and fetch the drinks from the fridge. I guess kids are still good for something.

    Haha. I love your response.

I often wonder what the future generations are going to think of the international roll down your window gesture you make when trying to communicate with the car next to you. Are they going to just start pointing their index fingers up and down like you’re pressing the button?? There’s nothing to roll up or down anymore!!

OMG Hilarious! I didn’t even think about that. lol

    Love it!

I adore torturing my kids with stories of my youth. They find it all so utterly fascinating. I tried to explain that the internet really didn’t exist until I was in college and that I didn’t know how to get on or use it until I was out of law school. That sent them into a tailspin.

Oh, and I wear dresses during the day all the time. I am today. Maybe not true day dresses, but I love dresses for making me feel “dressed” when I’m really just wearing something comfy!

Is it bad to admit I have never known the price of eggs in my life?

    So be it.

    • admin
      January 25, 2012 | 9:09 pm

I’m that way about the price of gas. My mom will be like “so what’s gas up there..it’s $3.49 here” and I’m like “um..I need gas. I buy gas. I drive away. I never look at the sign.”

I love love that striped top ….LOVE IT!

you looked so pretty and put together, if I stayed home I’d be all fancy like you are too…I like to get “dressed”.

I can’t wait to explain remotes and people who didn’t have them to my children. I’m going to blow thier minds. ;)

    Love that striped top!

My around-the-house casual wear for when I don’t plan to go anywhere is pajama bottoms, an old ratty VT sweatshirt, and fuzzy socks. I need to step up my game.
